We’re excited to announce a new feature in TrainingPeaks Virtual — you can now complete structured workouts using heart rate targets!
This gives athletes and coaches more flexibility when building and following workouts, especially for those who prefer training by heart rate zones instead of power.
⚠️ Important: You still need a power meter connected to TrainingPeaks Virtual in order to ride. This feature only changes the workout targets you see on screen — from power to heart rate.
How It Works
When you load a structured workout in TrainingPeaks Virtual, the platform will automatically detect if the workout is based on heart rate zones. If so, you’ll see heart rate targets for each interval instead of power.
Key Benefits
- Follow heart rate-based structured workouts in TrainingPeaks Virtual.
- Train using the heart rate zones set in your TrainingPeaks account.
- Perfect for athletes who prefer heart rate training but still want to ride indoors in TrainingPeaks Virtual.
Getting Started
- Pair your power meter and heart rate monitor in TrainingPeaks Virtual.
- Open a structured workout from your TrainingPeaks calendar.
- If the workout uses heart rate zones, the workout display will show heart rate targets for each interval.
- Start riding and keep your heart rate within the target ranges shown on screen.
Important Notes
- A power meter is still required to use TrainingPeaks Virtual, even for heart rate-based workouts. The platform relies on power data to control your trainer and simulate terrain.
- You cannot have both power and heart rate targets in the same workout — it’s one or the other, based on how the workout was built.
Why This Matters
This update gives athletes and coaches more flexibility to train the way they want, while still taking advantage of everything TrainingPeaks Virtual offers. Whether you’re heart rate-focused or simply want to follow a lower-tech approach to training, this feature ensures TrainingPeaks Virtual works for you.
